As the season turns, leaves throughout the park start changing colors, painting landscapes with hues of red, orange and gold. The views from the train will be stunning, and the cool autumn air will be a welcome alternative to visiting during the hotter summer months.

Another great time to visit is during the winter when the landscapes are covered with snow and the railroad transforms into a North Pole themed adventure. Be mindful that the stations are open air so you’ll only have limited weather protection

Though leaf-peeping conditions can vary each year, mid-October typically sees the peak of fall colors. Plan your visit in this month to see the region at its most vibrant and picturesque.

Not only is this a great time to see fall colors, but cooler temperatures also make for great hiking weather. In addition to riding aboard the CVSR, I spent two days enjoying some of the best hikes the area had to offer.

What is the best time of day to experience the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad?

While the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad can be a wonderful experience at any time of the day, I’d suggest starting your morning with a hike elsewhere in the park and then capping your afternoon off with a relaxing train ride before enjoying dinner back in town.

Mornings tend to be cooler, and the parking lots less busy which makes for a better hiking experience. Consider checking out the Ledges Overlook hike (one of my favorite in the area) and then resting your feet with a scenic train ride during the afternoon.

Do I need a reservation to ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad?

Given the popularity of this unique and historical attraction, it is necessary to reserve your seat well in advance. There are multiple departure times each day, from various stations, but please remember that there are rarely last minute tickets available.

While you may show up at the station and attempt to get a standby seat if you don’t have a reservation, this is highly dependent on the number of no-shows or cancellations. On that note, I did speak to a young couple during my visit who was able to secure passage on the train due to other guests not showing up.

Reserving your tickets well in advance from the CVSR official website will also ensure you can book the seats you’re most interested in. While the coach seats offer a more budget friendly price, be mindful that there are seats in cars that offer additional space or glass ceilings for a panoramic experience.

How long should you ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad?

In my case, I had booked a two-hour long roundtrip ticket from Akron to Peninsula, which felt like the perfect amount of time aboard the CVSR. Be mindful that the views will be the same during your return ride unless you’re able to move around the train.

I spent half the ride enjoying views from my seat and the other half wandering about the cars, grabbing a snack and taking in views from windows I could find on the opposite side of the car during the return trip to switch things up.

Be aware that maintenance conditions might affect the routes being offered throughout the year. During my visit, the Rockside station was closed, which meant the train turned around at Peninsula instead. This is also an important possibility to weigh if you’re still deciding on where to book your accommodations.
