My Northern Lights Trip to Norway with Travel with Wes was a top notch experience. The cost was worth the services and experiences of the trip. If another itinerary and the timing works out I would travel with Wes again!
This small group trip to Tromso, Norway will be limited to 14 travelers.
The trip will include six nights of 4-star accommodations at a hotel located in the city center that is extremely convenient for walking around town (you do not need a rental car).
Airport transfers and roundtrip transportation for all activities is included in the cost.
You'll have a dedicated guide for the entire trip (that's me!) along with local guides that we hire for various portions of the trip.

Three of the evenings we'll utilize a private small group Northern Lights tour operator that will take our group outside of Tromso to darker areas with clearer skies. We may even travel to Finland if that's what it takes to locate clear skies!
Additional activities such as the Sami Reindeer, cable car and husky dogsledding take place during the evening which will maximize our opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

The dogsledding and Northern Lights chances include thermal gear rentals and subzero rated winter boots to ensure you stay warm while we're outside during these activities.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and while you are not guaranteed to see them, our chances are extremely high. Tromsø is uniquely positioned in the heart of the Auroral Oval where Northern Lights displays are their most prominent, even when the KP index is low. You can learn more about the Aurora Borealis forecast here.
Clear, dark skies are another necessary ingredient for viewing the Northern Lights. In the winter, Tromsø experiences long nights which are critical to improving our chances.
If skies are cloudy near the coast, we have the ability to drive inland to Finland where we can use large mountain ranges to our advantage as their are usually clear skies on the other side.
My trips to Tromsø have enjoyed a 100% success rate for viewing the Aurora Borealis. Additionally, we partner with a local guide on our longer chases and they boast a 90% plus success rate on any individual night.
Tromsø boasts a population of over 60,000 people and it has a reputation for being one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights.
PinViews of the Tromso harbor area
Tromso has the perfect blend of extreme northern latitude, moderate weather and short daylight hours during November to create excellent conditions for seeing the Northern Lights.
During January, Tromsø will usually only see a couple hours of direct sunlight (or less).
The daylight that you will experience, is a beautiful, almost permanent golden hour glow as the sun sweeps extremely low across the Arctic sky.
The short windows of daylight are perfect for exploring town and enjoying some of the activities that we have planned during the trip.
While the long hours of darkness are ideal for Northern Lights viewing.
You can learn more about the city of Tromsø at their official tourism site.
All of the activities on this tour are classified as easy in terms of difficulty. However, this tour may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.
Guests should be comfortable navigating uneven terrain and walking on snow or ice. Micro spikes or winter studded boots are required for this trip. Micro spikes typically range from $25 to $75 in price for a budget to high end set.
You must be comfortable riding in a vehicle for several hours during the evening Northern Lights chases. We do make ample bathroom breaks and stops to stretch our legs along the way.
Each day we'll depart as a group from our hotel to our scheduled destination and activities.
Once our scheduled activities for the day have concluded, everyone is free to explore town on their own or with other travelers they meet during the trip.
My goal is to provide the group with all the benefits of a group tour, while ensuring there's still ample opportunity for independence, flexibilityand some to explore on your own.
Tromsø is a small and pedestrian friendly town. Our hotel is located near the harbor and main shopping area.
Between organized activities and free time, you should have ample time to explore town. I will also provide a list of personal recommendations on how you can fill your free time.
If you want to carve out some additional time for exploring town on your own or shopping, I would suggest selecting the optional +1 night add on during the check out process.
You're welcome to forgo any of the scheduled activities to substitute something you'd prefer to do at your own expense. Although, this isn't common or necessary!
If you elect to do so, just be sure to inform your guide.
If you'd like to schedule an additional activity during your visit I'd suggest booking the optional +1 hotel night, or contacting Wes directly to determine the best time slot to schedule it.
Norwegian is the official language of Norway. Norwegians are generally fluent in English and therefore there is no language barrier.
Restaurants will typically provide English versions of their menus, so you have nothing to worry about!
